The University of the Aegean (UAegean) is dedicated to conducting high level research and qualitative teaching on contemporary dynamic study subjects serving the economic and social development of the country, the cohesion of the European area and the values of a universal culture, of which the Archipelagos is an integral part.

Mission

In accordance with the articles 101 and 106 of the Greek Constitution, the State should take into consideration the designated role and structure of the University of the Aegean as one of the eminent institutions of the insular region providing for its development.

History

The idea of the foundation of the UAegean is interwoven with Greek history. Its first foundation was interrupted because of the results of the war and Smyrnα’s destruction, but its memory had been preserved by the Greek refugees from Minor Asia, mainly in the Aegean islands. Around 50’s the demand for a refoundation of the UAegean was raised on behalf of politicians a the Dodecanese region which has been annexed to Greece at 1947/8/. Since 1970’s this demand was addressed systematically by prominent members of the Dodecanesean society to Greek governments till the (re)foundation of the UAegean at 1984. Its foundation meant to serve the country in many ways: in order to contribute to the decentralization of the university education, to be a pedagogical model for other universities, to introduce sciences till then non developed in the Greek university, to signify the unity of the Aegean region, to support the islands by reinforcing their cultural tradition and offering them an alternative (versus tourism) model of cultural & economic development.

The University of the Aegean represents a historical attempt for the Greek University area, since its foundation in 1984, in fact, was a “re-establishment” as a continuation of the vision of the prominent Greek mathematician Konstantinos Karatheodori (or Constantin Carathéodory) at the University of Berlin, who proposed the foundation of an Ionic University based on the indisputable fact that the Greek world is a mediator of the Slavic and Turkish-Arab world and the world of the West. This international prestigious scientist considered that Athens, as the unique education center of Hellenism, is no longer sufficient for its needs, especially in terms of its eastern part. Therefore, he proposes three possible seats for the establishment of the new University: Smyrna, Thessaloniki and Chios, with numerous for each advocated selection criteria. The Founding Decree of the University of Smyrna is issued on December, 1, 1920 by the High Commissioner of Greece, after the signature of the Peace Treaty of Moudros (17/30 October 1918), assigning Greece to control the Smyrna area in order to maintain stability and peace in the wider area and Karatheodori undertook the task of co-ordinating the initial efforts The first plans predict the establishment of Schools related to the exploitation of the area as a neuralgistic point for the overseas Hellenism, while in the final course of the preparation works, the University was considered as equivalent to the big European Universities. Nevertheless, it has never been able to operate due to the Asia Minor Catastrophe.

The first plans included the establishment of Schools which would promote the development of the area as a key spot for the overseas Hellenism, while, when it was almost ready to operate, the University was considered just as good as other well-known European Universities. However, the Ionian University never opened its doors to students due to the Asia Minor Disaster in 1922.

The University of the Aegean is the continuation of Konstantinos Karatheodori’s initial vision. Re-established in 1984 PD 83/1984), it is one of the newest Universities in Greece and, during its first development phase, seven Departments were founded on four islands, in Lesvos, Chios, Samos and Rhodes. Until 2017, the 18th Department was also founded through successive phases of development. At this stage, the University extends to six islands, making the first and the largest multi-insularity higher education institution among the Greek HEI. Administrative headquarters of the University of the Aegean is Mytilene, while Schools and Departments are established in the island cities of Mytilene, Chios, Karlovassi, Rhodes, Ermoupolis and Myrina, forming thus a University-Network covering all the Counties of the Aegean.

Geography

The University of the Aegean is a multi-insular entity with units/Schools and Departments located on six (6) Aegean islands and in this regard is the most geographically dispersed university of the country.
