Students’ Αssociations
In every Department of the University of the Aegean, the community of students is represented through their Associations. Students’ Associations are the institution through which students are represented in an orderly way and the “fields” where political, social, cultural issues are discussed and where actions / interventions are organised for a series of issues concerning studies and the improvement of students’ quality of life.
The General Assembly is the decisive body of Students’ Associations. The highest possible participation in General Assemblies safeguards the highest democratic representation of the opinions/ views of students’ communities. The active participation of students (women and men), the elaboration of views, ideas, and proposals in a creative and critical spirit in order to make joint decisions about how to manage issues regarding the community of students is a precondition.

Cultural groups
With the initiative of students and other members of the academic community, a multitude of students’ groups/societies have been created in the UAegean. Students groups are the nucleus of life and culture for both the University and the local communities of the islands where the University is located. Student portals have also been set up to provide useful information and communication opportunities. These channels provide students the opportunity to participate in groups involved with dance, theatre, music and multitude activities framing the development of actions and initiatives based on their interests.
The astronomical society was established in 2009 and is a non-profit group aiming to open discussion and disseminate information about astronomy, astrophysics, quantum mechanics and other relevant fields in order for them to become accessible to outer space lovers and amateur astronomers. Every week there is a projection of an astronomical documentary, followed by presentations and discussion and telescope observation. Telescope observations are also organised whenever there is an astronomical phenomenon taking place (e.g. the transit of Venus across the Sun in 2012, a lunar eclipse, a planetary conjunction, etc.).

Involved mainly with diving, this group consists of students who are trained or novice divers. The group does not provide diving lessons as this is forbidden. However it cooperates with a diving school which provides special prices for students. It is an Association (having a statute), involved in diving activities and aiming to get to know and protect the ocean floor, and be involved in recreational activities. Group members participate in research projects as for example in the preliminary oceanographic environmental study for submarine areas of Lesvos aiming to develop scuba diving parks implemented by the Department of Marine Sciences. Taking photos of the seabed is another very interesting activity of “Triton”, whereas the interest of the group for marine ecosystems is also targeted at participating in initiatives to clean the sea floor.

The environment is our most precious resource. It is our home and we must therefore protect it. This was the basic idea that led to the establishment of the Pan-Gaia Group. As students of the Department of the Environment of the University of the Aegean, we recorded the fields in which we could offer help, we set our targets and started implementing them one by one, with the assistance of volunteers and professors (Green University of the Aegean).
You can see all our activities of the University’s webpage.

The cinematographic group of the University of the Aegean in Mytilene known as Cinematographic Gang has during the past year been activated again and started organising projections and a two-day noir film festival. The movies shown at the Paparisvas Building every Sunday are selected by all the members of the group during their weekly meetings.
The group has an archive consisting of 150 movies on VHS originally granted by the Department of Social Anthropology and History. The group also borrows films from the Department of Cultural Technology and Communication and organises special tributes to specific directors, actors or thematic areas as well as mini-festivals. This group is interested in the art of photography and more particularly black and white photography – at least for the time being. It is accommodated in a venue at the Students’ Club (on the University Hill), which is fully equipped and has a darkroom. The group organises photo exhibitions with every chance. Group members, whether novices or experienced in photography, are trained through closed meetings and discussions. The group also organises excursions in order to get its members acquainted with various techniques and taking photos of specific themes. What is of particular interest is the engagement of the group with “experimental photography”, i.e. taking photos with makeshift mechanisms (e.g. matchboxes).

The music group consists of several bands (and other groups) playing rock, punk, reggae, metal and other kinds of music. The size of the group is not steady. It may include 7-8 active music ensembles and at times may even host up to 17 bands.
Having no strict rules, various bands meet at the beginning of the year to determine how to use their venue at the Students’ Club. The venue is a set and insulated studio with drums and the appropriate equipment (amplifiers, etc) to support the voice and instruments of students. All groups get together to discuss organisational issues every two months or more often when they are preparing a gig or a concert. Concerts usually take place in various areas of the University or in city squares. There are groups which play on a systematic basis and some of these groups are getting ready to release a record.

“Orfeas” has been active since 1992 and has a long tradition in the organisation and participation in dance events taking place on the Aegean islands, in other parts of Greece and abroad. It is an organised association with a statute and is mainly involved with traditional Greek dances. The group is accommodated at the Students’ Club and has its own traditional costumes which are necessary for performances. The regular meetings and rehearsals are an opportunity for students not familiar with these dances to get to know them and become full members of the Association. When it comes to active members “Orfeas” is one of the largest groups of the University.

Aegean University Sports
The “Aegean University Sports” sector enables students to participate in a variety of sports activities and events based on their interests and sports preferences. By participating in the representative university groups of individual and group sports, students have the opportunity to represent the University in national university sports competitions and in European or world university competitions.
Activities for specific sports are organised on a regular basis in all the islands where university units are located. Depending on the interest the students show, activities are also organized in additional sports, often with technical support from students with proven experience and championship course in the respective sport.
