Aiming to forward the international outlook of the University of the Aegean, a delegation consisting of the Rectoress of the University of the Aegean, Professor Chryssi Vitsilaki and Professor Ioannis Lyritzis, went to China in order to solidify the cooperation with the Chinese Academy of Science (in Beijing) and the University of Henan (in Keifeng).

During the meeting, delegations signed a Cooperation Memorandum between the University of the Aegean and the Institute of Geology and Geophysics of the Chinese Academy of Science. The ceremony to sign the Memorandum was attended by academics and heads of laboratories and there was particular interest to continue and broaden the cooperation with the University of the Aegean the academic profile of which was presented in detail by the Rectoress. Professor Lyritzis presented the research project on archaeomagnetism on Greek and Chinese ceramics up to 5000 years, using a dating method developed and used with great success by the of the Archaeometry Laboratory of the Department of Mediterranean Studies. This work presented by Professor Lyritzis initiated further scientific cooperation between the two institutions.

Then the delegation visited Keifeng where during the formal reception ceremony hosted by the Chancellor of the University of Henan, Professor Lu Keping, both institutions sealed their will to broaden and deepen their cooperation in the context of the Sino-Hellenic Project [http://www.huaxiahellas.com/], based on the long-term cooperation between the two Universities and especially the efforts of Professor I. Lyritzis and Professor Changhong Miao. The reception ceremony was followed by the opening of the model Research Centre of Greek Culture (EKEP) and the beginning of the 1st Sino-Hellenic International Conference on Environment and Culture. The events were attended by Chinese professors from the Universities of Henan at Kaifeng (i.e. one of the 7 ancient capitals of China) and from other Universities of China and other countries (e.g. from the Fudan University, the British Columbia University, the Capital Norman University). Rectoress and Professor Chryssi Vitsilaki presented the University of the Aegean in her opening speech and gave a lecture on “New forms of Education & Learning as vehicles for International dialogue and understanding” during the Conference.
